MACAO, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The University of Macau (UM) on Saturday launched five new science and technology faculties and two research institutes, marking a restructuring of its academic and research platforms to strengthen innovation capacity and cultivate relevant talent.
According to information provided by UM, the newly established faculties are the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Information Science and Computing, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Design. The two research institutes are the Institute of Smart City Technologies and the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Brain Sciences.
UM Rector Song Yonghua said that the restructuring is designed to align with the national strategy of building the country into a science and technology powerhouse, to facilitate the integrated development of education, technology, and talent in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and to meet the needs of Macao's economic diversification.
Following the restructuring, UM now has 10 faculties. The university said it is establishing two additional research institutes in life sciences and clinical and translational medicine, bringing the total number of research institutes to 11. ■
