MOSCOW, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- A fire that broke out at St. Basil's Cathedral on Moscow's Red Square early Saturday was extinguished with no casualties reported, Russia's TASS news agency reported.
The fire started in the director's office on the cathedral's first floor, where personal belongings and furniture caught fire, according to an emergency services source quoted by TASS.
The blaze covered an area of about 10 square meters, and around 10 fire engines were dispatched to the scene. The fire was later brought under control before being fully extinguished.
Witnesses said smoke was visible for about 30 minutes. Although no open flame was observed, the smell of burning was noticeable in Zaryadye Park, adjacent to the cathedral.
Emergency services later confirmed that the fire had been extinguished and no casualties were reported. ■
