BUENOS AIRES, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Alexis Steimbach scored late as Gimnasia edged to a 1-0 home win over River Plate in Argentina's Clausura tournament on Wednesday.
The hosts broke the deadlock in the 80th minute when Steimbach met Maximiliano Zalazar's cross with a thumping header at the far post.
River controlled almost three quarters of the possession and had five shots on target but was denied by a series of fine saves from Nelson Insfran.
The result left River last in the 15-team Group B standings with two losses from its first two games of the season. Gimnasia is seventh with one win and one loss.
Elsewhere in Argentina's top flight on Wednesday, Barracas won 1-0 at home to Aldosivi and Defensa y Justicia clinched a 2-1 home win over Deportivo Riestra. ■
