JAKARTA, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia on Wednesday broke ground on the Legok Nangka waste-to-energy plant in West Java province as part of efforts to expand waste treatment capacity and renewable energy generation.
The project is expected to employ around 1,500 workers and generate about 40 megawatts of electricity, Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Yuliot Tanjung said after the groundbreaking ceremony.
Yuliot said the facility would convert waste into renewable energy, helping reduce waste accumulation and improve environmental quality. Commercial operations are expected to begin in 2029.
The government is also preparing similar waste-to-energy projects in major urban areas around Jakarta to increase waste processing capacity.
The Legok Nangka facility will process waste, including plastics, into electricity and alternative fuels using high-temperature incineration technology designed to minimize harmful emissions. ■
