DHAKA, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh is home to 189 tigers in the Sundarbans mangrove forest and zoos nationwide, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku said on Wednesday.

According to the state minister, current figures show that the Sundarbans hosts 124 tigers, the Bangladesh National Zoo houses about 15, and the country's other zoos collectively account for 50.

The current tiger population is not large enough to protect the species from extinction, the state minister told journalists after a rally in Dhaka marking World Tiger Day, which falls on Wednesday.

He said fostering widespread public awareness and cultivating a conservation ethic among younger generations are paramount to ensuring the long-term survival of this species.
