HANOI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The Politburo of the 14th Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) has directed a reduction of at least 20 percent in the number of public higher education institutions, with the restructuring to be completed by April 1, 2027, local daily VnExpress reported Thursday.
The requirement is set out in a plan issued by the Politburo on Tuesday.
Under the plan, multidisciplinary and multi-field public universities will be transferred to the management of the Ministry of Education and Training or local governments.
Public universities located in the same province or city will be merged or consolidated, while institutions in specialized fields will be exempt from the requirement, said the report.
According to the latest report from the ministry, Vietnam has 291 higher education institutions, including 228 public ones. ■
