LUANDA, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Unitel, Angola's leading mobile network operator, has confirmed that a cyberattack disrupted voice, mobile data and internet services nationwide.
In a statement issued following the incident, the company said the attack targeted its technological infrastructure at around 2:20 a.m. local time on Tuesday. It immediately activated its incident response and containment mechanisms, deploying technical and cybersecurity teams to minimize the impact.
Unitel said its services remain partially disrupted as efforts continue to stabilize the network and fully restore operations. The company did not provide a timeline for the complete restoration of services.
Jornal de Angola, the national daily newspaper, reported on Wednesday that the disruption affected more than 21 million Unitel customers, disrupting personal communications as well as business and financial activities. Many customers have switched to other mobile operators to maintain connectivity.
According to local media, the cyberattack occurred one day before Unitel's shares were scheduled to begin trading on Angola's stock exchange on Wednesday, marking the company's stock market debut following the privatization of a 15-percent stake. ■
