TOKYO, July 28 (Xinhua) -- One person has been confirmed dead after a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.1 rocked Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday, local media reported.
One person found inside a collapsed house in Yatsushiro City was confirmed dead after being taken to hospital, Kyodo News reported, citing the Kumamoto Prefectural Police.
The quake, which struck at around 4:27 p.m. local time in the prefecture in the center of the island of Kyushu, registered the maximum 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale in the hardest-hit areas, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. ■
