MOSCOW, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Two climbers died and four others remain missing following an incident on Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, the TASS news agency reported Sunday, citing local investigative authorities.
According to the Investigative Committee of Kabardino-Balkaria, a group of seven people was ascending the mountain Saturday. One of the climbers later descended and reported that two members of the group had fallen ill at an altitude of 5,100 meters and subsequently died.
The regional branch of Russia's Emergencies Ministry confirmed that rescuers had located the bodies of the two deceased and were continuing the search for the four others who remain missing.
Preliminary information indicates that the deceased were foreign nationals from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Located in the Caucasus Mountains in southern Russia, Elbrus is the highest mountain in Europe with an elevation of 5,642 meters. ■
