ISLAMABAD, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Two officials were killed and three others injured after heavily armed militants attacked customs and excise personnel on the Indus Highway in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province early Friday, police sources said.
The attack happened shortly after midnight near a new toll plaza in Kohat district, where about 14 to 15 militants launched a coordinated assault on customs and excise officials from three directions, the sources told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Three others, including a customs official and two civilians, sustained injuries and were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The attackers also looted the toll plaza and a weighing station, taking away about 2 million Pakistani rupees (about 7,100 U.S. dollars) in cash before fleeing the scene, the sources added.
A search operation has been launched in the area to trace the assailants, while an investigation into the incident is underway.
No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. ■
