HANOI, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam plans to reduce the number of nearly 37,000 public schools by at least 30 percent nationwide, with the reduction target rising to roughly 50 percent in areas with favorable conditions, local daily VnExpress reported.
The ministry estimates that the number of schools nationwide will be reduced by about 11,000, according to the Ministry of Education and Training's 2025-2026 school year report released on Friday.
The restructuring will affect more than 20,000 principals and vice principals, with about 11,000 to be reassigned as teachers to help ease long-standing teacher shortages, while the remainder will be transferred to other positions, take early retirement or leave their positions in accordance with regulations or based on their personal wishes.
The ministry plans to reorganize the school network into large single-level schools and integrated multi-level schools.
By the end of the 2025-2026 school year, the country had nearly 1.3 million preschool and general education teachers and about 98,500 principals and vice principals, including those employed by private schools and on contracts. ■
