RAMALLAH/JERUSALEM, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Four Palestinians and one Israeli were killed on Friday in an incident in the town of Tal, south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus, authorities have said.
In a press statement, the Palestinian Health Ministry said the four bodies were transferred to Rafidia Governmental Hospital in Nablus. The hospital also admitted four wounded people, three of whom were in critical condition.
The Palestine Red Crescent Society said its medical teams had evacuated the injured to the hospital after they sustained gunshot wounds.
According to local Palestinian sources, a group of Israeli settlers attacked homes in Tal and opened fire on residents, resulting in deaths and injuries.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that the incident began when Palestinians attacked Israeli hikers in the area.
It added that subsequently, the attackers opened fire toward the Israelis after stealing a weapon from a security coordinator who had arrived at the scene.
As a result, an Israeli man about 30 years old was killed, and four were injured, one of them seriously, according to Israel's national emergency service Magen David Adom.
Following the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that he would convene Defense Minister Israel Katz and army chief Eyal Zamir to discuss ways to respond to the "murderous attack." ■
