KUWAIT CITY/RIYADH, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait's air defense systems are intercepting "hostile" missiles and drones on Thursday night, with explosions heard in parts of the country, the Kuwaiti military said.

The General Staff of the Kuwaiti Armed Forces said on social media platform X that "air defenses are currently responding to hostile missile and drone threats," adding that explosions heard by residents were "the result of air defense systems intercepting hostile targets."

It urged the public to follow safety instructions, but did not disclose the number of drones intercepted, their origin, or whether the attack has caused casualties or material damage.

Meanwhile, Kuwait's state news agency KUNA reported that warning sirens have been activated across the country.

Over the past days, the U.S. military has launched several waves of strikes against Iranian targets, claiming that the attacks were in response to the Iranian armed forces' targeting of vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, and aimed at "degrading Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping."

Iran has responded with waves of missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. military bases and facilities in the region, including those in Kuwait.

Earlier on Thursday, Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Jordan issued a joint statement, condemning what they called continued Iranian attacks targeting their territories.
