SYDNEY, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Australia's largest electricity retailer on Thursday confirmed that customer data, including partial bank account and credit card details, has been compromised in a cyberattack.

In a statement released through the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), Origin Energy said there has been "unauthorized access and disclosure" of some customers' data.

It comes one day after the company, which supplies electricity, gas and internet to 4.8 million customers, said it was investigating a potential security incident.

Origin said on Thursday that it was working to understand the total number of impacted customers.

It said that impacted data may include customers' names, addresses, dates of birth, contact numbers and the last four digits of a credit card number or the last three digits of a bank account number.

The company said on Wednesday that it did not believe the impacted data included credit card or bank details.

"I'm sorry this has happened. Customers trust Origin with their information, and I apologize for the impact this may cause," Chief Executive Officer Frank Calabria said on Thursday.

"One of our key priorities is taking action to secure our systems and ensure no further unauthorized access," he added.

The incident was first reported on Wednesday by newspaper The Australian, which was contacted by an alleged hacker who claimed to have accessed the data of around 2 million Origin customers.
