BUDAPEST, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Hungary's Prosecutor General Gabor Balint Nagy submitted his resignation on Wednesday, saying he wanted to protect the independence and credibility of the prosecution service from political disputes.
In a statement released by the Prosecutor General's Office, Nagy said he had asked for his mandate to end on Aug. 25.
Prime Minister Peter Magyar welcomed the resignation in a social media post, calling Nagy "another Orban puppet" and saying the departure marked another step in what he described as Hungary's political transition.
Nagy's resignation comes as Hungary's new government continues a broad overhaul of key state institutions following April's parliamentary election. Last week, constitutional changes ended the mandate of former President Tamas Sulyok, triggering the process to elect a new head of state. ■
