TBILISI, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Georgia and Azerbaijan have introduced a bilateral electronic permit exchange system for international road freight, Georgia's Land Transport Agency said Monday.

The new digital platform enables Georgian carriers to use electronic permits for shipments to Azerbaijan. Building on a similar system already in place for Türkiye, it allows the two countries to exchange and manage permit documents through a single online environment.

Agency director Bakur Mikadze said the system streamlines administrative procedures, accelerates and secures data exchange, reduces reliance on paper documents and improves the efficiency for cross-border road transport management.

In 2026, authorities from both countries exchanged about 1,000 electronic permits for each permit category. A full transition to the digital system is scheduled for 2027.

According to the agency, the move is expected to simplify cross-border freight operations and strengthen transport and logistics cooperation between the two countries.
