BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.79 percent to 3,864.37 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 4.81 percent higher at 14,264.29 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by these two indices stood at 2.97 trillion yuan (about 437 billion U.S. dollars), up from 2.7 trillion yuan in the previous trading day.
Stocks related to semiconductors and memory chips led the gains, while those related to oil and gas, as well as medicine and healthcare were among the top decliners.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 7.05 percent to close at 3,685.97 points.
The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 8.75 percent higher at 2,060.48 points on Tuesday. ■
