CAIRO, July 19 (Xinhua) -- The outskirts of Abadan in southwestern Iran's Khuzestan province were targeted in a U.S. missile attack on Sunday, which resulted in no casualties, the semi-official Tasnim news agency said on social media platform X, citing a provincial official.
Abadan, home to Iran's oldest oil refinery and bordering Iraq, has been targeted in U.S. strikes earlier this week.
Meanwhile, Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain reported on Sunday fresh Iranian aerial attacks targeting their territories, which also triggered U.S. refueling planes evacuation from southern Israel.
Jordan's air defenses intercepted three missiles launched from Iran toward Jordanian territory on Sunday, while a fourth one fell in a remote area in southern Jordan without causing any casualties or material damage, state broadcaster the Jordan Radio and Television Corporation said on X.
Some media reports said the missiles were aimed at U.S. military aircraft stationed in southernmost Jordan's coastal city of Aqaba, which directly borders the Israeli city of Eilat.
Following the incident, Israel's Channel 13 News reported that the U.S. military on Sunday evacuated refueling planes from southern Israel's Ramon Airport, which is located some 18 km north of Eilat, after the missile attacks toward Jordan.
Israel's state-run Kan TV News said commercial passenger flights at the airport were delayed following the attacks.
Earlier in the day, the U.S. Embassy in Amman issued a security alert saying Aqaba's airport and seaport had been evacuated due to a "specific and credible threat," urging Americans to avoid traveling to the sites until further notice.
It also renewed its warning for Americans to avoid military bases in Jordan.
However, Jordanian authorities later denied the U.S. embassy's claim, saying both facilities are operating normally.
Also on Sunday, Kuwaiti authorities said a power generation and water desalination plant in the country came under Iranian attack for the second time in two days, sparking a fire and disrupting electricity generation.
Bahraini authorities also said its air defenses intercepted a number of Iranian aerial attacks targeting the country.
The latest developments came amid heightened tensions in the Middle East as the United States and Iran have traded rounds of attacks. The United States has conducted eight waves of strikes on Iranian targets, while Iran has responded by striking U.S. bases and facilities in several regional countries.
On Sunday, the Iranian Health Ministry said on X that U.S. strikes targeting its southern provinces since June 27 have killed more than 57 people and injured 517 others. ■
