GAZA, July 17 (Xinhua) -- At least eight Palestinians were killed and 19 others injured on Friday in an Israeli airstrike on a gathering of mourners during a funeral procession in the Nuseirat refugee camp, central Gaza, according to Palestinian medical sources and eyewitnesses.
The sources said the strike occurred as dozens of Palestinians were participating in the funeral near the Ahmed Yassin Mosque. The procession was hit when it passed through the vicinity of the Balata market, west of the camp.
The Al-Awda Medical Complex in Nuseirat said it received eight bodies and treated 19 others injured in the strike, adding that some of the injured were in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses said chaos and panic ensued following the strike, whereas ambulance and civil defense teams rushed to evacuate the victims and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
According to the eyewitnesses, the funeral was held for a Palestinian man killed earlier in the day, though no further details about his identity were available.
The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the incident. ■
