TEHRAN, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Locations in the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan province, were hit Thursday night by U.S. projectiles, as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the start of a new wave of strikes against Iran, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported.

The strikes were carried out at 9:35 p.m. local time (1805 GMT), the report said, adding that further details will be provided following preliminary assessments.

It also said an explosion was heard in Qeshm Island in Hormozgan, while confirming separate U.S. strikes near the city of Ahvaz in the southwestern province of Khuzestan.

On Thursday night, CENTCOM announced on social media platform X that "U.S. forces began conducting a new wave of strikes against Iran for the fifth consecutive night to further degrade Iranian military capabilities."

The new wave came after days of clashes between Iran and the United States, despite a peace memorandum of understanding signed by the two countries in mid-June, under which they were expected to begin negotiations within 60 days toward a final agreement.
