JAKARTA, July 16 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed, 24 others were missing after a passenger boat sank off Indonesia's South Sulawesi province following an engine failure on Wednesday, rescuers said Thursday.
Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Makassar said that 49 were rescued so far.
Muhammad Arif Anwar, head of the Basarnas Makassar office, said authorities had initially been informed that 50 people were aboard, but the number was later revised to 74 following verification.
Maritime accidents often occur in Indonesia, an archipelagic country where ferries and small boats are widely used for inter-island transportation. ■
