UNITED NATIONS, July 15 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday announced Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez as co-chair of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Advocates group.
"The Sustainable Development Goals are at risk of slipping out of reach. Our mission is clear: to accelerate progress at scale and speed. I welcome Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez joining (Barbadian) Prime Minister Mia Mottley to strengthen advocacy and drive the urgent action needed to deliver the SDGs," Guterres said in a press release.
Sanchez has replaced Justin Trudeau, the former prime minister of Canada, as co-chair of the group. Mottley, who was appointed in 2022, will continue in her role as co-chair.
Sanchez said he is committed to working to ensure that the implementation of the 2030 Agenda translates into opportunities, well-being, and prosperity for all people, while caring for planet Earth for present and future generations.
"We need to accelerate action and appeal to our collective responsibility to move forward," Sanchez was quoted as saying in the release.
The SDG Advocates are influential leaders who support the UN secretary-general in raising global ambition and action to keep the promise of the SDGs. ■
