WASHINGTON, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Iran has allowed a U.S. citizen, who was detained in December 2024, to leave the country, U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday.
"She is now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition. The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran!" Trump said on Truth Social.
The U.S. citizen, who was later identified as Dena Karari, had been trapped in Iran since December 2024 on bogus charges and is now safe and traveling back to the United States, according to her lawyer Jared Genser.
Trump's announcement follows increased tensions between the United States and Iran in recent days.
The United States launched a second round of strikes against Iran on Wednesday night, targeting Iranian military capabilities used to threaten vessels freely transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. Central Command said on X.
Earlier on Wednesday, the command said that it had launched precision munitions against coastal defense systems and cruise missile storage and launch sites on Greater Tunb Island.
The Iranian Health Ministry said on Wednesday that the recent U.S. attacks on southern Iranian provinces had killed 35 people and wounded more than 300 others. ■
