KABUL, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Personnel of counter-narcotics police arrested a drug smuggler and discovered 90 kg of opium from his possession in Takhar province, north of Afghanistan, on Tuesday, provincial police spokesman Nizamudin Omir said Wednesday.
Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a car and discovered 90 kilograms of opium from cavities of the vehicle, the official said, adding that police took the narcotic's owner into custody.
The suspected drug trafficker, according to the official would be handed over to judiciary after completion of preliminary investigation.
Afghan government has intensified its crackdown on illegal drugs, as police reported the discovery of huge quantities of outlawed objects including hashish and opium and the arrest of over 80 suspected drug traffickers over the past couple of days. ■
