SANTIAGO, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed early Tuesday in Chile's capital Santiago after a pickup truck crashed into a public transport bus and a commercial building, sparking a fire, firefighters said.
"We have five people dead who were occupants of the pickup truck and the fire is now under control," Sergio Yevenes, third commander of the Santiago Fire Department, told reporters.
According to Chile's Carabineros police force, the occupants of the pickup truck fled a police checkpoint and ran a red light, causing the vehicle to hit a bus traveling toward downtown Santiago.
The ensuing explosion also severely damaged a shop and a pharmacy in the popular commercial area of the Franklin neighborhood. ■
