KABUL, July 14 (Xinhua) -- More than 10.7 million women and girls in Afghanistan will require humanitarian assistance in 2026, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Afghanistan said.
Local media Tolo News, citing the UN agency, reported on Tuesday that women and girls continue to bear the heaviest burden of the country's humanitarian crisis, with growing needs across health, protection and other essential services.
The UN agency said shortages of female health workers, declining funding and restricted access to healthcare services have placed Afghanistan's maternal healthcare system under increasing strain.
It warned that the challenges have heightened concerns over a possible rise in maternal and newborn deaths, calling attention to the need for sustained humanitarian support to address the country's health and humanitarian needs. ■
