CAIRO, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi met with visiting United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Egypt's New Alamein City on Sunday to discuss bilateral ties as well as regional and international issues of common concern.
The two sides focused in particular on the latest developments in the Middle East and efforts to prevent further regional escalation, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.
They also underscored the importance of maintaining close consultation, coordination and joint action in light of the current challenges facing the region, read the statement.
The meeting came amid rising concerns over renewed regional escalation, as the United States and Iran exchanged a fresh round of attacks over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday despite a memorandum of understanding signed by the two countries in mid-June. ■
