KUWAIT CITY, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait's air defense systems intercepted hostile missiles and drones early on Wednesday, the General Staff of the Kuwaiti Army said.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Kuwaiti military said any explosions heard by residents were the result of air defense systems intercepting "hostile targets," urging the public to follow safety and security instructions issued by the relevant authorities.

The statement did not provide further details on the origin of the projectiles or whether there were any casualties or damage.

Earlier on Wednesday, local media outlets reported that warning sirens had sounded across Kuwait. Meanwhile, Iran's state-run Press TV reported that heavy explosions rocked the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait.

The development came shortly after the U.S. military said it had carried out a new round of strikes against targets in Iran, allegedly in response to recent Iranian attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
