OTTAWA, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Canada's merchandise trade surplus with the world widened to 4.2 billion Canadian dollars (about 3 billion U.S. dollars) in May from 3.4 billion Canadian dollars in April, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday.
This marked the third consecutive month that Canada recorded a merchandise trade surplus, the national statistical agency said.
According to the agency, total merchandise exports rose 0.9 percent in May to a record 77.1 billion Canadian dollars, representing the fourth consecutive monthly increase.
Meanwhile, total merchandise imports edged down 0.2 percent in May to 72.9 billion Canadian dollars.
Combining international trade in goods and services, Canada's total exports increased 0.9 percent to 97.9 billion Canadian dollars in May, while total imports edged up 0.3 percent to 94.1 billion Canadian dollars.
Consequently, Canada's total international trade surplus with the world expanded to 3.8 billion Canadian dollars in May from 3.2 billion Canadian dollars in April, the agency said. ■
