JERUSALEM, July 8 (Xinhua) -- A new study by Israeli and Dutch researchers has found that individual human brain cells are capable of more complex computations than those of other mammals, offering new insights into human intelligence, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem said on Wednesday.

Published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study suggested that the complexity of human neurons may help explain the brain's unique abilities, including language, imagination, and problem-solving, paving the way for future developments in artificial intelligence (AI).

For decades, scientists have largely attributed human intelligence to the brain's size, its nearly 100 billion neurons, and its vast network of connections. The new study suggested that part of the explanation may also lie within individual brain cells themselves.

Using computer models and AI tools, researchers found that human neurons act as highly advanced information-processing units, capable of performing complex calculations.

The findings challenge the traditional view of how intelligence develops and could help scientists better understand the human brain while inspiring new approaches to AI technology, the researchers said.
