NEW YORK, July 6 (Xinhua) -- England midfielder Jordan Henderson will undergo surgery on a broken wrist he suffered on Sunday night while celebrating his side's dramatic 3-2 win over Mexico to reach the World Cup quarterfinals.

The 36-year-old Brentford player fell over an advertising board while celebrating with fans and teammates and had to be taken from the pitch on a stretcher before going to hospital.

"Jordan [Henderson] just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad. It's a quite serious injury and it doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital," commented England coach Thomas Tuchel after the game.

The injury means Henderson will not be able to take part in the rest of the tournament, although the BBC has reported that he is keen to remain with the squad for the rest of its time in the United States.

Henderson did not play in Sunday's win, which came thanks to two goals from Jude Bellingham and a Harry Kane penalty, but was still one of four England players booked on the night by referee Alireza Faghani, who also sent off England defender Jarell Quansah.

The former Liverpool, Sunderland and Ajax player has played only six minutes at this World Cup, making a brief substitute appearance in the 0-0 draw with Ghana, but Tuchel values his experience in helping see out matches and his influence in the dressing room.

His absence could give a chance to Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo, who has yet to play a single minute at this summer's tournament.
