UNITED NATIONS, July 6 (Xinhua) -- The UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided on Monday to maintain the status of the Human Rights Council as a subsidiary body of the General Assembly, by adopting a draft resolution titled "Status of the Human Rights Council" without a vote.
The UNGA also decided to review the status of the Human Rights Council again, at a time no sooner than at its 90th session and no later than at its 95th session.
In the resolution, the UNGA acknowledged that peace and security, development and human rights are the pillars of the United Nations system and the foundations for collective security and well-being, and recognized that development, peace and security and human rights are interlinked and mutually reinforcing. It also recalled the importance of adequate and sustainable financing of the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms.
The Human Rights Council, established in 2006 by the UNGA and composed of 47 member states, is an intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and making recommendations on them. ■
