MADRID, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Real Madrid confirmed on Sunday the signing of Netherlands international defender Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan on a four-year contract.
The 30-year-old right back completed the move after the Netherlands' World Cup campaign ended, having delayed confirmation of the transfer until his country's tournament was over.
Madrid paid Dumfries' 20 million euro (23 million U.S. dollar) release clause to secure the defender, who is expected to help fill the void left by Dani Carvajal. The veteran right back departed at the end of last season after his contract was not renewed.
Dumfries will compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold for a place in the starting lineup.
He becomes Madrid's fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate and Bernardo Silva. Konate and Silva both joined on free transfers.
The club has also confirmed the return of Jose Mourinho as head coach as it looks to revive its fortunes after two seasons without winning a major trophy. ■
