LOS ANGELES, July 5 (Xinhua) -- China's Wang Manyu and Kuai Man claimed the women's doubles title, while Wen Ruibo and Yuan Licen emerged victorious in an all-Chinese men's doubles final at the World Table Tennis United States Smash on Saturday.
Facing Japan's Miwa Harimoto and Hina Hayata, winners of this year's WTT Singapore Smash, top-seeded Wang and Kuai went through an intense battle for a 13-11, 4-11, 14-12, 11-8 win.
"Teaming up with Kuai again, we didn't have great chemistry in our first match here but managed to win in the end, so there is a lot to sum up. Overall, winning the title deserves recognition," Wang said after the win.
"Without playing together for a long time, our chemistry was not quite good and we didn't find our groove in the first match. But after two or three matches, we gradually rediscovered our rhythm," Kuai echoed.
In their duel against top seeds Lin Shidong and Huang Youzheng, Wen and Yuan won the opening game 11-9, but found themselves on the back foot after losing the next two games 11-8, 11-6.
However, they bounced back strongly afterwards, winning 11-7, 11-9 to secure the title.
World No. 1 Sun Yingsha beat teammate Chen Xingtong 11-5, 11-5, 11-6, 11-6 in the women's singles quarterfinals, and will face another compatriot Wang Yidi, who also dispatched South Korea's Joo Cheon-hui in straight games.
"I did well at the start and was focused on each point, without loosening up after building a 2-0 or 3-0 lead. Hopefully that concentration will carry into tomorrow's match," Sun said.
"It will be a tough match against Wang. She overcame some challenges to make into the semifinals, so I need to go all out," she added.
Kuai came back from a 1-3 deficit in games and saved two match points in the fifth to edge Japanese chopper Hitomi Sato 5-11, 11-5, 9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-3, 18-16.
"Both of us played well today. Leading 10-6 in the decider, I was a bit conservative and impatient. Luckily, on the last two points, I was resolute and kept a clear mind," Kuai said.
Kuai will play against Harimoto in the women's semifinals.
In men's singles, France's Felix Lebrun came back from two games down to beat his elder brother Alexis in the family rivalry, 9-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8.
"It was a tough match, but I managed to come back, so I'm very happy about myself," Felix said.
"Table tennis is our passion. We are just happy to travel the world to play table tennis, to play each other in the big events. We try to enjoy it as much as possible. Of course, there is one that will be a little sad at the end of the match and one who will be happy. But overall, in some years, we will both be very happy and proud about what we did," he added.
Other players advancing into the men's semifinals include Sora Matsushima of Japan, Sweden's Truls Moregard and Russia's Vladimir Sidorenko. ■
