HOUSTON, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Morocco forward Brahim Diaz praised his side's character after a 3-0 win over Canada sent the North Africans into the World Cup quarterfinals for the second consecutive tournament.
Morocco did not have everything its own way in the first half, with Canada showing energy and discipline to keep the contest alive. But after the break, Morocco raised the tempo, became sharper in attack and more assured in possession, and its back line kept Canada at bay to complete a convincing victory.
Brahim, who has contributed four assists and one goal at this World Cup, said the team's reaction after a difficult opening period was the key.
"We knew we didn't have a good first half, but we came out to put everything on the pitch," he said. "Sometimes in football, and in life, you have bad moments. What matters is how you lift your head and keep going. I'm so proud of my team."
The Real Madrid forward said Morocco's collective spirit, rather than individual numbers, had driven the team into the last eight.
"I'm very happy with what I'm giving and how I'm helping my teammates," Brahim said. "But the most important thing is what we are achieving as a team. Today was a difficult match, but the mentality we showed was incredible, and that makes the difference in these kinds of games."
Brahim also thanked Moroccan supporters for their backing.
"The love I have received from Morocco since my arrival has been incredible," he said. "I'm very happy to be in the World Cup quarterfinals with my teammates. We want to keep advancing." ■
