MEXICO CITY, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Portugal rallied to beat Croatia, Spain cruised past Austria and Switzerland overcame Algeria on Thursday to book places in the World Cup round of 16.

In Toronto, Goncalo Ramos scored in stoppage time as Portugal recovered from a goal down to beat Croatia 2-1.

Ivan Perisic gave Croatia the lead with a 53rd-minute strike before Cristiano Ronaldo converted a 68th-minute penalty after Renato Veiga was fouled by Nikola Vlasic.

Ramos completed the turnaround with a bullet header after Rafael Leao's cross in the 94th minute.

Croatia appeared to equalize in the 103rd minute but Josko Gvardiol's close-range effort was disallowed for offside in the buildup.

Portugal will face Spain in Dallas on July 6, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.

"We dominated the game in the first half. In the second half after the goal we panicked a little, but this is football," Ronaldo said. "After the penalty, I think it was a little bit better for us. We created a few chances and I think at the end of the day we deserved to win the match."

Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic praised his players, saying his team did not deserve to be eliminated.

"I have nothing to say, I'm sorry we lost, especially because of the second half in which we were better, creating chances," Dalic said. "We conceded in stoppage time, but I have nothing to reproach the players."

Earlier, Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice as Spain cruised to a 3-0 win over Austria in Los Angeles.

Oyarzabal struck either side of Pedro Porro's maiden international goal as Spain secured its first victory in the knockout stage since it was champion in 2010.

"The big teams turn up when their presence is needed," Spain manager Luis de la Fuente said after the match. "I think today we've seen a great game. I'm happy because in all aspects we've been almost perfect, but we have to keep improving. Every match now is going to be very difficult."

In Vancouver, goals in each half from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye gave Switzerland a 2-0 win over Algeria.

Switzerland will face either Colombia or Ghana in the next round in Vancouver on July 7.
