NEW YORK, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Julian Nagelsmann has become the latest coach to lose his job after a disappointing World Cup campaign, resigning as head coach of the German national team.
Nagelsmann had initially said he wanted to continue following Germany's exit in the last 32, which came after a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay on Monday. However, he ultimately bowed to public pressure in the wake of yet another World Cup disappointment for the Germans.
Bernd Neuendorf, President of the German Football Association (DFB), "expressly" thanked Nagelsmann for his work. "He is characterised by a high level of commitment and extraordinary ambition. Julian Nagelsmann is also an extremely responsible and sincere person whom we all value," Neuendorf said.
Increasingly, it appears that former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp will be named as Germany's new coach, despite having initially ruled himself out of contention.
Klopp, currently Red Bull's global director of sport, is reported to be "fundamentally willing" to take on the role, just days after saying: "I understand that when people talk about the national coach, my name is mentioned. But it's not the right moment to talk about it, especially not with me."
"I have a job that I really enjoy and as far as I know, it's not a part-time job. The fact is, Germany was eliminated today, and this is not the moment for me to think about Jurgen Klopp's future," he commented only three days ago. ■
