LOS ANGELES, July 1 (Xinhua) -- China's Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha will take on Brazil's Hugo Calderano and Bruna Takahashi in the mixed doubles semifinals after both pairs notched 3-2 victories at the World Table Tennis United States Smash on Wednesday.
Olympic mixed doubles champions Wang and Sun recovered from two games down to edge France's Alexis Lebrun and Japan's Satsuki Odo 9-11, 10-12, 11-2, 11-6, 11-4.
"Before the match, I had thought it would be very tough. Actually, I didn't feel so comfortable in the mixed doubles this time. After winning the third game, we communicated well and found a better feeling in the fourth and fifth games to come back," said Wang, 26.
Wang and Sun will face Calderano and Takahashi in the semifinals after the Brazilian pair prevailed 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-4 in their quarterfinal against American pair Liang Jishan and Sally Moyland.
Another mixed doubles semifinal clash will see China's Wen Ruibo and Kuai Man facing South Korea's Lim Jong-hoon and Shin Yubin.
In the women's singles, Sun eased past Germany's Nina Mittelham in straight games 11-1, 11-4, 11-6 to advance into the last 16.
"After a five-game quarterfinal match in the mixed doubles, I became more active on the court later in the singles. I am getting better in the tournament," Sun noted.
Other Chinese paddlers, including Wang Yidi, Chen Xingtong and Qin Yuxuan, also secured berths in the singles round of 16, while Wen, Shi Xunyao and Chen Yuanyu bowed out of the second round.
Also on Wednesday, Chinese pairs Lin Shidong and Huang Youzheng, and Wen and Yuan Licen reached the men's doubles semifinals, while Kuai and Wang Manyu, and Wang Yidi and Chen Yi reached the last four of the women's doubles. ■
