ULAN BATOR, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Amendments to Mongolia's Road Traffic Safety Law prohibiting children under the age of 18 from riding mopeds, electric scooters, electric bicycles, electric off-road motorcycles, and other similar light electric vehicles came into effect on Wednesday.

Under the revised law, if a minor is found operating a moped, including an electric scooter, an electric bicycle, or another vehicle with similar specifications, legal responsibility will be imposed on the child's parents or legal guardians, as well as the business or individual responsible for providing or renting the vehicle.

Traffic accidents involving electric scooters, electric bicycles, and electric off-road motorcycles have increased four- to five-fold over the past two years, prompting the stricter regulations, according to the Ministry of Road and Transport.

In 2024, a total of 532 traffic accidents involving electric scooters, mopeds, electric bicycles, and electric off-road motorcycles were recorded nationwide, resulting in three fatalities, the ministry said. Authorities said 95 percent of these accidents occurred when riders were not wearing helmets or other protective gear.

According to the National Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics, 754 injuries related to mopeds, electric scooters, electric bicycles, and electric off-road motorcycles were recorded during the first five months of this year.
