HANGZHOU, July 1 (Xinhua) -- China's first sea-river intermodal zero-carbon shipping route officially went into operation Tuesday, with a 10,000-tonne-class pure electric container vessel departing from Jiaxing Port for Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, both in east China's Zhejiang Province.

Operated by Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd., the vessel is 127.8 meters long and 21.6 meters wide, with a capacity of 742 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). Powered by 10 containerized batteries offering a total energy storage capacity of about 20,000 kWh, it is expected to save roughly 800 tonnes of fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 2,000 tonnes annually.

Jiaxing Port is a key hub connecting Zhejiang's inland waterway system with its coastal shipping network, while Ningbo-Zhoushan Port ranks as the world's busiest port by cargo throughput.

According to the Jiaxing maritime safety administration, the new route operates with zero fuel consumption and zero exhaust emissions, cutting about 60 kg of carbon dioxide per TEU shipped. It offers exporters in the Yangtze River Delta a low-carbon option for transporting goods to global markets.
