SINGAPORE, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Singapore will raise regulated electricity and town gas tariffs for the July-September quarter after higher natural gas prices, driven by the conflict in the Middle East and increased energy production costs, its Energy Market Authority (EMA) said on Tuesday.
EMA said in a statement that the household electricity tariffs will increase 17 percent to 31.91 Singapore cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), before goods and services tax, from the previous quarter. Town gas tariffs will rise 7.1 percent to 23.48 cents per kWh.
The city-state imports most of its energy needs, with imported natural gas accounting for about 95 percent of electricity generation and serving as the main feedstock for town gas production.
EMA said natural gas prices rose sharply from late February and remained elevated between April and June due to the Middle East conflict, resulting in higher costs for electricity and town gas producers.
It noted the situation in the Middle East remains uncertain. However, should conditions improve, fuel prices could ease and lead to lower electricity and town gas tariffs in the fourth quarter of 2026. ■
