KHARTOUM, June 30 (Xinhua) -- At least 18 people were killed and another injured on Tuesday in a traffic accident in River Nile State in northern Sudan, according to the Sudanese police.

According to a police statement, a truck veered off course on a secondary road in the Qubqaba area and collided with a passenger vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

The injured one was taken to Abu Hamad Hospital for treatment, it added.

The statement said that the River Nile State Highway Police responded immediately to the scene, transported the victims' bodies, evacuated the injured person to the hospital, and completed legal procedures under prosecutorial supervision.

Sudan has long struggled with high rates of traffic accidents due to reckless driving, speeding, poor road conditions, and unsafe public transport vehicles.

Major roads linking several states have also been affected by ongoing military clashes since mid-April 2023, while heavy rains in 2025 damaged parts of the country's road network.
