MONTEVIDEO, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay midfielder Manuel Ugarte will undergo further tests to determine the extent of ligament damage to his left knee, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) said on Sunday.
The 25-year-old Manchester United player was forced off before halftime in Uruguay's 1-0 loss to Spain on Friday, a result that sealed La Celeste's World Cup group-stage exit.
"In coordination with his club, Manchester United, initial medical examinations have been carried out and indicate a ligament injury," an AUF statement said.
"We will continue working together throughout the assessment process to determine the full extent of the injury."
Ugarte started all three of Uruguay's World Cup matches, which also included a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia and a 2-2 draw against Cabo Verde.
Uruguay finished third in Group H behind Spain and Cabo Verde. ■
