KUWAIT CITY, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait's military said its air defense systems intercepted "hostile" missiles and drones on Sunday, as explosion sounds echoed across the Gulf country during interception operations.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the General Staff of the Kuwaiti Army said the air defense systems were "intercepting and destroying" incoming threats targeting the country.
The military said the explosion sounds heard across Kuwait were caused by the interception operations, urging residents to remain calm and follow instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
It did not identify the source of the attacks or provide immediate information on casualties or damage.
According to local media, air raid sirens sounded twice across Kuwait beginning at around 3:00 a.m. local time (0000 GMT) on Sunday.
The developments came amid escalating regional tensions after neighboring Bahrain activated air raid sirens and advised residents to seek shelter, while the United States announced a new round of strikes against Iranian military targets on Saturday. ■
