TEHRAN, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Iran's year-on-year inflation rate in the third month of the current Iranian calendar year, between May 22 and June 21, rose to 88.6 percent, the official news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.

Citing figures released by the Statistical Center of Iran, the report said the country's consumer price index in the same Iranian month, called Khordad, reached 656.4 units, indicating a 5.9 percent increase from the preceding month and an 88.6 percent rise year-on-year.

It added that the index recorded a growth of 62 percent during the 12-month period ending June 21, compared with the same period a year earlier.

The rise in Iran's inflation rate has gained momentum since the reimposition of U.S. sanctions following Washington's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

Inflation has accelerated more rapidly in recent months amid the country's conflict with Israel and the United States since earlier this year.
