ADDIS ABABA, June 27 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian government on Saturday announced that the country has generated 3 billion U.S. dollars from coffee exports during the concluding 2025/26 fiscal year, which will end on July 7.
Ethiopia's Minister of Agriculture Addisu Arega said the revenue generated from the export of coffee to the international market accounts for more than 30 percent of the East African country's total export trade revenue this fiscal year.
This came as relevant stakeholders in Ethiopia's coffee sector value chain on Saturday held discussion on a new national coffee development package that will be implemented over the next five years, aiming to "significantly enhance" the country's benefits from the coffee sector, the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture disclosed in a statement.
The country posted a record more than 2.65 billion U.S. dollars in revenue from the export of about 470,000 tonnes of coffee to the global market during the previous 2024/2025 fiscal year, according to data from the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA).
Noting the coffee sector's significant importance to the country's economy and livelihood, the agriculture minister highlighted the government's ongoing efforts aimed at transforming the sector, and further augmenting the country's coffee export earnings.
Director General of ECTA Adugna Debela, for his part, stated that implementation of the new five-year national coffee development package is expected to boost the country's coffee production output from the current 900 kg per hectare to 2,100 kg by 2031.
Debela highlighted that the anticipated coffee production growth will have a positive impact on the country's annual coffee export earnings, which is expected to reach 6 billion U.S. dollars.
With more than 6 million smallholder farmers engaged in coffee cultivation across Ethiopia, the East African country is known as the origin of Arabica coffee. The country's coffee varieties are recognized worldwide for possessing rich quality and flavor, ranging from winy to fruity and chocolaty, making it in high demand across the globe. ■
