BELGRADE, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Serbia is facing an intense and prolonged heatwave starting Friday, with maximum temperatures forecasted to reach up to 39 degrees Celsius through early next week.
The Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia and health authorities have issued high-level alerts for severe heat stress as daytime highs spike and nighttime temperatures remain above 20 degrees Celsius.
Officials also warned of critical wildfire risks due to dry soil conditions and issued hydrological advisories as dropping water levels threaten navigation on the crucial Danube and Sava rivers.
This extreme weather aligns with seasonal climate outlooks predicting a warmer-than-average summer for the country with up to 65 tropical days exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. ■
