VILNIUS, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania has extended restrictions on airspace near its border with Belarus for another six months, citing ongoing security risks linked to balloon incursions and recent drone-related incidents, local media reported on Thursday.

According to the Transport Ministry, the measures will remain in force until Jan. 1, 2027 and the extension, which covers 12 restricted zones, was approved at the request of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Transport Minister Juras Taminskas said the regional security situation remains fragile and Lithuania "must be prepared to respond to any violations of airspace," he said.

Recent air alarms in Lithuania, including a drone alert issued in May, have heightened concerns about airspace security and the country's ability to respond quickly to potential threats, local media said.

The original airspace restrictions are scheduled to expire on July 1.
