JAKARTA, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia is seeking to end salt imports by 2027 despite currently importing millions of tonnes each year, Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said Thursday.
Sakti said President Prabowo Subianto has instructed his ministry to accelerate efforts to strengthen domestic salt production and reduce import dependence.
Official data show Indonesia's national salt demand reaches around 5 million tonnes per year, while domestic production has yet to meet demand, especially for industrial salt.
The government is preparing technology-based salt production facilities, including seawater processing projects, to raise output and ensure a stable supply for both food and industrial needs. ■
