COLOMBO, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet has approved the appointment of a special cabinet subcommittee and an officials' committee to respond to the possible impact of El Nino, the Department of Government Information said on Tuesday.
The department said possible El Nino conditions from the latter part of this year could increase the risk of changes in rainfall patterns, high temperatures, droughts and floods.
The government decided to implement a national action plan to minimize the impact, it added.
The cabinet subcommittee would ensure coordinated operations among all state institutions, raise public awareness and take urgent measures to reduce disaster risks, while the officials' committee, chaired by the chief of presidential staff, will support the subcommittee, it said. ■
